Are you coding for IE 9? I have a client site that is not lining up correctly in 9. It looks fine in all other versions.

My question is: Is IE 9 ready for designers to start coding CSS for? If so, are we going to have to resort to hacks and conditional statements?

In my experience of IE9 so far, it behaves pretty much the same way as FF and Chrome (havn't tested others). It actually seems to follow the standard and do as it's suppose to, whereas all previous versions did not

Perhaps the issue lies somewhere in your code, not in IE9's inability to understand it. Make sure you validate your site. Otherwise, post your issue here and someone might be able to sort it out.

The site validates. I have no problem changing the width of the div to make IE 9 display correctly. The site is perfect in FF, Chrome, IE 7 and 8. It dispalys correctly when I switch the Broser mode in the Developer Tools (F12) in IE 9 to Mode 7 or 8.

My question was are others having to change code to have 9 match other browsers?

I guess I can say that IE9 is still a baby for most developers. A good portion of people who are using IE are still with IE6-IE8. Its because the cost of upgrading their system and the incompatibilities with old software. With that said, IE9 is on the newer Windows (for example: vista, windows 7). So it really depends on your client and their target demographic if you should worry about IE9.

If you do have to code for IE9 you could you the conditional css (or javascript) to help fix it or you could review over your code and see what could be causing the issue. Just remember like all IE's they are different (not like updated as with FF/Chrome/etc), so they all behave different.

I agree, IE9 behaves pretty much the same as previous versions.
I did not see any differences at the moment.

IE9 isn't fully developed yet in my opinion thus you shouldn't use it as a coding standard as it may change vastly and quickly.

You could say that about the current version of EVERY browser.

Personally, and this is MY OPINION ONLY, but I could care less about IE users. Anybody who uses IE on a daily basis and generally thinks it's a 'good' *cough* doesn't deserve to see the pretty, fancy effects talented web designers/developers can create. It's the user's fault that their crappy browser doesn't support it, so why should we stoop down to feed little IE when we can work with titans like Firefox and Webkit?

That's my rant.

I'd like to agree with you on that one!
But, as said earlier, it depends on who your viewers are. If you, for example, are trying to sell a product and 90% of all your viewers use IE, then you don't have much of a choice other than to make your site viewble in IE, like it or not.

Ah yes, that's the only exception. Like someone said above, you target your demographic and not what you think should be the best.

I use IE daily, and I design using it. I perfer to design for the majority. I like it better than FF (I think IE renders text more smoothly too), although I like using FF for the error console.

I know, everyone is probably going to throw rotten eggs at me now. I think I'm the only developer who uses IE.

I've always thought that text smoothing feature makes the text a bit blurry and harder to read
But everyone's entiteled to their own opinion, no matter how strange it seems I guess
