They will if its <div class="left"></div> if you suround all your content then you are telling the browser to display all your content to what ever the class is Im going to search for some info I think you may be able to use the gif as a background image inside a single cell table with the table height at 100%

try this the only thing is, that you will have to adjust the height every time your content changes I cant figure out how to make it strech automaticly then use <div class="left"></div> dont put anything between the tags just place the div in the body just like that

If you want the div to stretch vertically with your content you have to have your content inside that div and it can't use positioning since that removes it from the normal document flow.
I think the way you're currently attempting to have the sidebars appear you'll need to specify the height for each page.
There are ways to get what you want to work, but I think you'll need to wrap everything into a container div and go from there.

i thought the following might work, it kinda did. i made an image that is 760px wide and put it as the content background image. one problem, it goes 100% down the visible area until you scroll down.

ok so how does it work without positioning the only other way I can think of is to create cells in the existing table, one on the left and one on the right with the cell height at 100% and the image as a background in those two cells that way when your content expands or shortens the two cells will expand or shorten with the content, but we were talking about css and the only way I see to do it in css is to position it if there's another way Id like to know

From what I saw with the way the site was set up you could create a wrapper div around everything say div#page and then positon that using css positioning. In this case the div would just need to be centered in the window.
With everything inside the page div you could use margins. You'd basically be replacing top and left positioning here with margin-top and margin-left. The numbers might have to change since everything would now be inside the positioned page div.
To create the side bars you could then just add a border on the left and right of the page div since it would be extending all the way down the page.
Does that make sense?
You can still use positioning on some of the various elements inside the page div, with the exception of the content that's extending to the bottom of the page. So for futilesoul's site I think it's div#main that contains the content to the bottom of the page and that can't be positioned with css with what I'm suggesting. However the other things like the menu div and the banner div could all be positioned using css. The main div would just use margins to push it down and to the right.

i dont really understand,
but i found if i have the bg image on the body at 100% it will go to the bottom of the page, is there a way i could center the bg image of the body?

It works in IE,

Glad you got it working. I guess there's always more than one way to solve any problem.
It's working in Opera 8 on my XP laptop. I don't have safari to test, but you can check how it looks in safari at the following site.
