Please check out my latest layout experiment in its first draft:

div-ostomy experiment

The layout validates strict xhtml and uses no divs!

What do u think?

Cheers, Anthony Brewitt

It's all nice and dandy but the structure of your site is wrong.

Headings (H1, H2, etc...) are supposed to be used as block elements, that's what div's are for.

And the p element is for paragraphs not navigational bars.

Well my idea behind this is to cure a common question, how to layout a div-less liquid css layout that supports browsers and technology we have now! (supported= css1 / xhtml 1.0)

I have used block elements for layout, h1, h2 etc...

I agree on the nav part, but thats just there for now!, will be replaced with anchors, maybe in a list!

I understand that divs are divisions for block elemnts and spans span across inline elements but....

I am just preparing myself for oncoming xhtml 2.0, when we will no longer have divs and spans!

cheers, anthony

I'm not sure where you heard divs and spans are going away. Maybe you know something I don't, but the latest working draft of xhtml 2.0 I could find at http://www.w3.org includes both divs and spans. xhtml 2.0 is trying to remove presentation from xhtml (so not attributes on elements), but it's keeping the structure. Presentation is to be handled by css, which is really how everyone should be doing things now anyway.

div's and span's are going away?! Are you kidding me? XHTML has finally arrived for us to use those elements. Like vangogh said, I sure would like to where you heard that!

And further more, here's a list of XHTML 2.0 elements straight from W3C's site!
