One of the things that really bugs me about IE too. I came across this article on max-width for IE, but the basic idea should also work for min-width as well.

I've used this a couple of times mostly with trial and error to get it right. There may be a better solution and if someone knows of one I'd be happy to know about it as well.

width in IE is treated like min-width is other browsers it will grow when the text is larger and there is space to grow.

At least that is how I understand width in IE.

to make sure you set a min width in a layer you can add a one pixel transparent image and its with to the desired width of your DIV starting from 1px.

No offense, but a 1 px transparent image is as bad as the old spacer-gif trick with tables.. completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.

You want a lesson in liquid layouts, read this by Holly Bergvin and John Gallant:
http://www.positioniseverything.net/articles/jello.html

It's called 'jello mold' and very flexible.

There is an article specifically addressing widths for the Jello Mold:
http://www.positioniseverything.net/...ello-expo.html
