It sounds like your familiarity with "Web 2.0" comes from its abuse as a buzzword. If your desire to follow that approach is genuine, you might want to read O'Reilly -- What Is Web 2.0 as a starting point.

As for learning how to build sites that rely on CSS to drive presentation, the resource lists at the top of the CSS board amount to an embarrassment of riches.

I'm sure that if you look through those, you'll be able to firm up your goals enough to ask the sort of specific questions that are easier to address.

A couple of excellent beginner books on building table-less pages:

Build*Your*Own Web*Site The*Right*Way Using*HTML*&*CSS - SitePoint Books

HTML*Utopia: Designing*Without*Tables Using*CSS, 2nd*Edition - SitePoint Books

If you want a Web 2.0 site then prepare to have an ugly website as Web 2.0 is all about gradient contrasting backgrounds, tons of whitespace, and an abundance of plain text.

That's ridiculous. Being loaded with graphics isn't what makes good design, sometimes less is more. More whitespace wouldn't hurt a whole TON of overly crowded web pages out there.

I might have missed something here, but what's wrong with plain text? It's what search engines index, it's the easiest thing for users to be able to read, and it's the least bandwidth intensive alternative.

samparanjan: like persist1 said, Web 2.0 is basically a buzzword. If you need to know how to make a site like that, asking a generic question as you did probably won't give you the answer you ultimately want. What you're better off doing is laying out a website scenario and saying "how can I use the most current ideas and technologies to maximize my user experience for this particular site?"

In other words, give a more specific example and you'll probably find your question is answered a lot more effectively.

autoecart does have one thing right - the prevalent "Web 2.0" aesthetic (those are doubt quotes BTW) leaves an awful lot to be desired, unless you're a big fan of negative space. If in design you follow a busier, more baroque or Victorian muse, sites like Flickr, Odeo, Technorati et al. are visual crap.

However, I think there's a misapprehension of the problem for the symptoms. Many of those first-gen sites were hothouse projects built by engineers and IA's without much input from trained graphic designers (save Flickr), and it shows. If enthusiasm for the Web 2.0 paradigm remains undimmed, we'll start seeing launches that pay excellent attention to matters of graphic design. I'd put forward lawrence.com | With malice towards none as a better example of what can be done under the right leadership (even if the site cited doesn't have as much audience participation as the design allows).

I did not say that having alot of text is a bad thing as mine do but you can do the same thing with regular web 1.0 design and have a site that is more pleasing to look at then with a Web 2.0 standard.
