Hello! This is my first post and I am not sure if I can explain what I want to accomplish. But here goes!
I have a jpg image of a property plat with 8 lots that I want to have the ability to hover over each lot and have a pop up note with a small scale photo/sketch of the house with possibly a short description also. At the very least, I want a description to pop up over each.
I have never used CSS before but I am realizing I need to learn it as it seems to be taking over in web design. I bought a book, "CSS, the Missing Manual", but it is all over my head when it talks about the hover pseudo-class.
Can anyone explain this to me in laymans terms? It would be very much appreciated.

I am guessing you are talking about Tooltips. Try to google for DHTML tooltips. They are all JavaScript coded and accomplish exactly what you have described. Just find the right one for what you need.

I've found something that may help you. The code and examples of use are included. Just unzip the file and try it out.

And if you are still interested in using pseudo classes, here is the best tutorial on :hover. There also are :before and :after pseudo's, but the easiest way for your purpose is still the DHTML tooltip above.

Ok, the FIRST thing you need to know about the hover pseudo-class is that is does NOT work on anything except links <a> in IE 6 and below. To make them work on other elements, you need what they call a 'behavior' called "whatever: hover". You can find that here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~peterned/csshover.html

You can also achieve the effect you want without javascript and using just CSS. See a basic example here: http://meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/popups/demo.html and

Thanks for your replies, I will do some reading and try to figure out which to use. It looks like no matter what, it is not a simple thing to accomplish. Should have guessed that. Thanks again for you time and suggestions!
