Is it just me, or is the root of practically EVERY problem in this particular forum Internet Explorer?!
I constantly feel like starting a HUGE campaign to get FireFox to replace IE on as many computers as possible - ESPECIALLY IE6!!! GRRRR!!!
Is it just me?

I look at it like this:
IE6 is a six-year-old browser with an available replacement version.
Sooner or later (likely sooner as new PCs ship with Vista), IE6 will be phased out or at least a non-factor.
I have seen just as many silly things happen with Firefox as I have with IE.
I have seen features implemented with IE (e.g. the gradient filter) that I would like to see implemented with other browsers.
All browsers have pissed me off time and again.
An open source browser will ultimately lead to more problems than IE ever could (it's only a matter of time before the Starwares and Clarias of the world start messing with it.)
It's not just you, but I think it's a situation that has been blown way out of proportion and has just gotten silly over the course of time.

I WISH IE 6 were dead !! Unfortunately, there is still a huge majority of users that are still using IE6, including my entire company. I cannot ignore IE 6 when developing sites, as much as I wish I could, it would be impractical. I don't even have IE 7 on my machine at work, Corporate won't upgrade and I don't install it at home because I don't like the browser anyway.
IE6 and it's bugginess and MS way of doing things is definitely the bane of web designers, and until the user base for IE 7 dramatically replaces IE 6, we're stuck with it.

It's gotten to the point that I often forget to check my work in IE anymore since I use FF almost exclusively. The only bad part is that a lot of people still use IE.

The reason you can't have gradients on other browsers, is because IE calls some function from a system file on windows XP/vista. Maybe other browsers will make a built in one... but that might make the browser resources go up dramatically.. not sure on that though.
I seem to get most problems with IE6 as well, but for that i use conditional comments, so really i rarely get problems that are not fixed easily, i think you get far less cross browser compatibility issues when you use XHTML Strict, well thats just what i have noticed through experience.

most of the problems are for ie6, Like other people said here it's old. There are only a few problems with ie7. Unfortunately it's going to be a few years yet before most people update.
At least I think we can now say that ie5 and ie5.5 is dead.

Actually, it's all versions of Windows that are IE6 compatible. Personally, this is something I hope they put into CSS3.
The point is that sometimes going outside of the 'standards' range can lead to innovation and new ideas.

Danny must have just butt his head against one of the many browser problems.
I go through phases. When I'm coding functionality, I get detached from browser wars and problems, I'm deep into making a brick fly. Then, of course, reality hits, usually as a complicated QA with 30 or 40 bugs along the lines of:
bug #33 The ___ Looks great in firefox, terrible in IE, see attached img.
And often the picture is enough to make sane people cringe. Actually, I have to take that back. that was deffinately true as far as IE6 went, but IE7 has improved. By no means is it problem free, but I'd say it has cut down the browser display issues by 90%, so instead of 30 or 40 such reasons to say "IE SUCKS!", now maybe I'm getting only 3 or 4.
Could it be we'll have to wait another 6 years for IE8 to come along to expect another 90% improvement?
Then again, maybe Cheshire_Cat has a line on the future, in which case we'll need 3 such revisions (please tell me we don't need to wait another 15 years).

I guess I don't really see it as a big deal.
There will always be sucky browsers that we have to deal with. If the web is your profession, then suck it up. Its part of the job. The good news is, most browsers are getting better.
IE6 is still much better than its predecessors. Not as god as FF but, still better than NS4.7 and Konqueror.
It is compliant enough that if you start with a very minimal compliant page (with doctype declaration) its still fairly easy to *****-smack it with some CSS to bring it into line. Of course, like the IE before it, caching only seems to work when you don't want it to. The more experience you have, the less you suffer and/or care about browser problems.
As for my personal use, its Konqueror or Firefox. Sure IE will run under wine on my linux box but, I don't even like it on windows.
I don't really hate it, or care to, I just deal with it. Besides, if web development was easy, I probably wouldn't be able to earn the salary I do. Hmmm, maybe I should say, "bring on the sucky browsers..."

I think IE sucks.
And as MS ripped the last version, it makes it eaven less useful.

I really don't mind IE too much.
I use both IE and Firefox. I find it is important to do this so that I notice problems in either browser for the sites I run.

But if browsers didn't suck, you wouldn't need to attend those weekly AA meetings.

If IE didn't exist, web design would be so much easier.
