Is there a simple IE6 fix for margins when using floats? I came across this page and it renders fine in Firefox but IE6 appears to expand (double?) the margins on the left and right columns.

Yep, it's the doubled-float margin bug. Here's the lowdown and the fix:

Use conditional comments and a separate CSS file that contains ONLY the fixes for IE.

why still using IE6 anyway, JavaScript also buggy on IE6 XD

1/ IE 7 doesn't run on anything less than XP

2/ From my stats on several sites 60 - 70% of IE users are on IE6

3/ What's XD ?

4/ What's javascript got to do with the topic ?

My stats show the same Chris - 60-70% using IE6, so it's still a huge factor.
