o yea, makes sense. I just want to use it for links that exit my site, so when they are on my site they will always be able to navigate, but when they click an external link, it will not affect my site
Breaking the "back" button by opening new windows is a very old and outdated idea.
User are far more savvy about using browsers now and trying to keep them "on your site" simply doesn't really work any more.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds
Thought for today:- Is SEO the only industry where all the cowboys are Indians?
Chris and Diane I agree with you and my reasoning is that if you leave the links to open in the same window I can still open them in a new window if I choose. But if you force the new window then I can't open the link in the new window.
However I've been learning recently that a lot of people actually prefer the new window. I'm still with both of you on this and I don't think forcing a new window does anything to keep people on your site. They're still on another site, only in a different window, but I was surprised at how many people seem to like the new window thing. Hard to believe I know.
