The question is in the title, how do different domain registrars settle this question? Can a domain be left by will to relatives? In other words, has a domain got any legal status?

I would say that if the domain is left to somone in the will then it goes to that person/company. If in the will it doesn't say anything, then I'm guessing the domain will be left to expire.

Whoever controls the account login, password and email address as the admin contact can change the registeration to whomever they want to.

This does make it important for another family member to at least have a copy of the information.

To give you a direct answer to your question, I would assume that a domain is classed as intangible personal property.

Usually domains are registered for 1 or 2 years and in case if the owner passoff in between then i think after the domain expiration period it goes for redemption and then it is open for renewal as usual. if the owner of domain have specified about this domain name to get transferred to someone else in his will then that person should take over the control of the domain name by paying it's renewal.

Domains too expire I personally think that there is an successor to take the control of the domain in case the owner of the domain expires.

Short answer is you can assign rights in a will to assets that are not owned but leased, licensed, etc. Domain names are no different. You don't own a domain name, but you do have the rights to it as long as you continue to register it and pay for it. Therefore a will could very easily assign rights to a domain name or a whole slew of them, and it is up to the individual who acquires those rights to preserve them aka renew registration.
