Hi,

Wonder if you guys can give me some advice other then don't invest a penny in buying if you're just intending to do so to make a profit rather then develop a website!

I've noticed it's really hard to get a domain name with a .Com if you have a short or popular name or both but there are opportunities to acquire the same name for something with a .net or .us or .org. For example I just registered from Godaddy, www.petsusa.net. Is something like this a waste of money because of the .net? Also say I could get hypothetically, something with numbers like say www.18-21.org or www.18to21.usfor example. Would the use of numbers or hyphenates, basically mean these domain names have no value especially coupled with a non .com?

Thanks for your opinions.

I don't think .net or .org TLDs are a bad investment. .com is generally the better extension, but that doesn't mean other extensions can't be used.

You just have to be aware that most people will assume .com if they don't know the extension so you have to do a little more work to get them to remember .net or .org.

It's also ok to use country specific extensions like .co.uk if your site is at all country specific.

Beyond .net, .org, and country specific I'd say other extensions aren't worth the money.

With the hyphens and numbers it's again a matter of getting people to remember them. I'd avoid the hyphen if you can, though the fact that we're discussing this on webmaster-talk.com is an indication they can be used. Numbers might throw someone off if you're using a lot of them, but I think something like 18to21 isn't too hard to remember.

Just keep in mind that the more you deviate from domain.com the more opportunity there is for someone to get confused. That doesn't mean you can't be successful with a domain outside the domain.com format, but the further you get away from it the more work you'll likely have to do to get the domain to stick in people's minds.

The fewer letters the better, petsusa.net sounds like a very good short domain. It most likely has some value. You will find as said above .com is usually the best, that doen't mean .net and .org are bad. .net is the better of the 2 you mentioned as you limiting your reselling most likely to a organization.

Hello,

If .com is not available than .org / .net is the only way to go

I honestly dont see a problem with .net .org extensions. Some of these domains could carry the same value as well. BTW nice domain choice
