Hello all, stumbled across this site thanks to google!

I have someone whos interested in a domain i bought last year, i received a hand written letter from him and his company who are very large and make gambling sites/software, they done ladbrokes, william hill etc si i know they probably have a bit of cash to throw around and hes 100% legit.

My problem is in the letter he mentioned that he thought " around a few hundred pounds region" for the domain, to be honest thats a great price to me but i noticed he's snapped up the .co.uk and .net names of it vefore me asked me, and probably is more desperate than i presumed. I'm totally sure the domains are going to be one big gambling site. I think he must of also noticed i have it listed on sedo for 4000£, but I just put that number in for fun/parking.

So...how should i go about this...take his offer or counter it up a bit and hope he doesnt run away?

In my opinion... say that you value the domain at a much higher value than that and recently turned down a £750 offer because it was to low. This way your not going against him saying thats to low... but he knows he has to pay more than he thought.

Don't be unreasonable... but squeeze as much out as you can... care to show me the domain via PM? I'll tell you the price you should be aiming for!

Thanks

Dave

you can always save your domain for you, and if they really would make big gambling site around this name, they will either pay you a little bit more, than you expected

their first offer is not the last, for sure

Colin,

.com domains always attract a higher price than .co.uk domain

In my case i always use a co.uk domain but like the .com version to point to it. I wouldnt want to spend thousands in marketing for some two bit merchant to trade off the back of me with my traffic thats types .com in error - neither will the interested party

If the buyer has secured the .co.uk version chances are they plan to use that domain and will want the .com version. How many other .com domains are available that are similar / variation to yours?

Not knowing how relevent the domain is to gambling its hard to value but i would comment as follows:-

1. Ive paid £4k for .co.uk domains where they are relevent to me (two words)
2. Ive wallked away from deals where the domain owner has got to gready in relation to what the name is and the sellers stupid opinion of what they think the domains worth
3. Ive secured a .com (two words) that i desperately wanted for £750 but off the record would have gone to 8-10k for it!
4. A friend of mine has sold a few non prime (two word) domains 12-15k a go

My advise to you would be that if its a strong gambling (two word)domain you hold on a .com with not many similar or like it and you think it will be used in a big commercial way ask for £10k and do a deal at £7k if you have to or chance your arm for an even higher offer but remember "a bird in the hand etc etc...."

If the domain is real premium like a one word gambling term then you have to hold out for a significant offer

I think writing to you asking for the domain for a couple of hundred pounds is a total try on.

Good Luck

Some random thoughts -

I agree with RichTC's post.

Think about the name itself and whether it’s a great name for a large audience of buyers. In other words, how often will a potential new buyer come along? The domain name market is not very liquid.

You could try going to some of the domain name selling marketplaces such as forums.digitalpoint.com or dnforum.com and putting the name up for sale at a price you'd be happy with to see if there is interest, or asking for an appraisal.

It has been my experience in selling domains, that if I did not need the money, I was better off waiting for a better offer, or countering with a higher offer than I was comfortable selling with.

You can counter offer, at the very least responding in a courteous manner is always a good idea, at the same time you can still be somewhat vague about your intentions.

I buy more than I sell. In a few instances where a seller has stuck to their initial selling price, emotion has gotten the better of me, and I've paid the full price they asked.

- Tom
