Most efficient way of setting up domain and hosting?

I was just wondering if there is a more efficient way to how I have been doing things. Ive been doing this for years and until today havent really given it much though.

I register my domain names with GoDaddy and set the nameservers to ns1.mydomain.com, ns2.mydomain.com, etc etc. Then in MyDomain I set up a record there pointing the A record to the IP address of my dedicated server (on Quickpacket for those paying attention).

Should I find a way to cut MyDomain.com out of the equation? Do I need the middle man? And does including Mydomain.com in the second step slow down my site access at all?

Thanks for the advice guys.

Your nameservers must have nameservers of your current web hosting provider to get things work correctly.

What do you mean?

Can you please walk me through the most efficient process for this? I get the feeling the way Ive always done it is outdated now or not necessary.

No, you can't cut out mydomain.com from this process. Your domain s need to have nameservers binding hosts to ip addresses. And no it doesn't slow down access to your site, unless of course the nameservers you're using are slow.
