You're new to domain names? You want to make a website so bad. But you don't know where to start.

First thing you need to think about is what your topic is going to be. Now there are millions of topics out there, and obviously the popular ones would be harder to create. When choosing a domain, you want to obviously make it as short as possible, so your visitors don't have to type a story in the URL box.

For example your topic is on bears. You want a domain name that has to do with bears. Now I am almost positive most of the short bear domain names are taken, so you need to take into consideration other ones that will do the job. Remember you are making a website, and will have to maintain it, and keep it populated.

Certain domain names are fine just the way they are. They are type-ins, so they don't need as much search engine maintenence. Overall make sure your domain name fits your topic well, and that the name is attractive to other users. If you can't make it real short, make it as short as you can.

Hope this helps,

Jason F.

I dunno. Sometimes long but logical is better than being short.

Well the domain you buy also has to be pretty easy for people to remember. Otherwise, how are people gonna remember it?

True, but that is why you develop something with a longer name. It makes it easier for them to remember.

its always better to buy a name that ends in .net than to put a heifin in the name.
ex.
MajesticMurals.com is taken, so rather than go with Majestic-Murals.com,
Its better to go with MajesticMurals.net

Interesting theory. Not sure how true it is though.

A very straightforward name and easy and catchy to remember is what you need.

Many of those names are taken though, so development plays a huge part in domain names value. Sure if you have short keyworded domain names, you're going to get a lot more traffic faster, and without as much SEO, etc... But you have to realize that developing a site and keeping your viewers happy and coming back is the number one key.

I think a catchy name would help bring in new members and really help development go faster. You are right about most of those names taken but I think there are some out there occasionally when they drop.

Yeah definitely. If I had a domain name like real.com, or cool.com, I could do so much with it. I could make it even more popular than it already is probably, because proper development and content is the key to making it so great. They probably offer millions of linkbacks in searches, so why not make it a billion?
