Generally I would avoid registering domains like that as for the reason MGS stated. The domain would have less value in the eyes of it's visitors as time passes on.
If I am creating a history web site though, I would go for one of those(this actually gives me a good idea). For instance, computers2004.com, I would create and post information about advancements in 2004 on computers.
The only thing I'd worry about is if I create a few of those some years in a row and they are something my visitors look forward to, and someone decides to register one and try to sell it back to me. (Ex: I create computers2004.com, computers2005.com, computers2006.com and someone grabs computers2007.com before me).
