Lately, I've been reading a lot about domaining. Sure I've read the ridiculous articles that have made the magazines, but I've also read about smaller operations too.

My question is, is this for real? I [think] I understand the components involved but surely there are some steps or information that is being left out.

Where is a good place to go and learn more about how to do this? Is it best to just learn by experience?

Before I take a run at domaining, I'd like to hear from some people who are having moderate success with it.

You can try to make it with new registers, but IMHO the bulk of the money to be made right now is in buying domains from owners (at auction or wherever) and the occasional drop-catch. Here's a list of the domains being auctioned at TRAFFIC NYC, which starts today I believe:

Marketplace Home » Live Auction » Overview » Live Auction

I am not into domaining, but I think an easy way to get into it is just to watch trends. Anything new out? Products may be difficult but hobbies and such?

I personally want Gin.com and Dermatology.com. What I wouldn't do for dermatology.com... never have to work another day if you play your cards right with that one.

It is like every other investment opportunity. It takes lots of work, lots of time, and very good knowledge at what you are doing. Most people fail to make a dime, while a few may figure out a strategy that works. Competition is very tough so you will be competing with some very good people who have lots of experience. You'll probably lose money if you go in to quickly, but if you take your time and devote yourself to it, you may end up being one of the specialists who make money - sort of like real estate.

Hi,

The best way is to visit forums such as this one and other popular domain forums. You can google "domain forums" to find these. There are also some ezines that specialize in domains. I am not sure whether I can mention any of them, so I will just let you know that they are easy to find.

Remember, that these forums are populated with colleagues, who are, at the same time, competitors. So you have to filter out lots of the advise and just learn how to make your own decisions.

Experimenting with building a domain, will give you lots of experience on what makes a domain name valuable and what does not. It is not intuitively obvious. I cannot give away too many secrets, but most of the good information cannot be found on forums (just like stock tips). You have to discover them yourself, or work with someone who is willing to share (not so easy to find).

Conserve your cash! Don't lose too much money while you are learning. Start small, and try to figure everything out. Above all, remember that there are thousands (maybe tens of thousands) of very savvy competitors out there, and you will have to figure out your own unique way of competing. If you are smart, creative, hard working, and patient, you may be able to become a good competitor.

Good luck!

Rich

That is sound advice. I doubt you'll get anyone to tell outright how they became successfull in domaining, it's a very closed, select group. Successful domainers built their portfolios by carefully studying the market(s) and being one step ahead of the crowd. If you're constantly telling yourself "Geez, I wish I had thought of that" .. it's not for you. To get rich domaining, you've got to be the one who thinks up the networks, the marketplaces, basically .. the future!

I've already said too much...

As far as a way to start check out namenewbie.com

And start with just a few names. Too many, esp. in the begining and you'll lose focus.
