I just found out that Antarctica has their own TLD: .aq!

So are the penguins trying to fight us electronically now?

This seems a bit stupid to say the least. I can't imagine that many sites using this TLD. Oh well.

Their region doesn't even have a single web server in it! I feel like making up a fake country and asking for my own personal TLD - how about .dan!

The full list of gTLDs & ccTLDs is at http://www.iana.org/domains/root/db/

Bouvet Island (.bv) is far more comical than Antartica.

It's a 50 sq m uninhabited lump of rock covered in glaciers and owned by Norway.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many out there. Are we going to start having tlds for individual states & cities next? Should I get .buffalo or .ny?

Why in the world does that TLD exist?

What were they smoking when they decided "Hey, I think I'm going to assign a TLD to a 50 square mile lump of rock, I know how badly they could use it."

That actually sounds like a good idea . They'd be far better put to use there than as the crazy places like "bouvet island" with not one person or web server in it's vicinity.

You'd probably have to ask ICANN about something like that:
http://www.icann.org/tlds/tld-criteria-15aug00.htm

bookhim.dan.no

Or maybe register a domain under the Netherlands's TLD, so you could have something like:

www.d.an

Although since it's really short it's probably already taken , go with something like www.coolguyd.an .

Closest thing to having a TLD that you're interested in having.

I have looked at that and thats for like XXXXXX.tld but i want a second level so it would be down to the controller of .uk so nominet.

Also as i dont have the $50,000 application fee just to put a application in then when it might not be accepted.

but i would guess would be a little esier maybe to get nominet to make a sld..

Anyone have any clue..

Thanks,
Dan

Are you actually being serious about this?

I think if Nominet allowed it, lots and lots of webmasters would want their own 2nd level domain - I very much doubt it's allowed unless you have a really good cause.

Looks like there's 6 organizations you could do it through. Granted though, I never tried to do anything like this, it would be interesting to see though.

An Antarctica TLD? I didn't realize it existed. That seems a bit silly. Looks like most .aq sites are relevant, at least.

This might just be me, but does anyone think it would be better if there was more restrictions on what domains u have and what used for?

So like if you had a research website in antartica you HAD to have .aq or like .org or one appropriate to the organisation.

or if you a ISP you have to use .net (which i belive is what it was originally made for in the first place?)
