If you ever wanted your own TLD ->

ICANN relaxes domain-name rules

Next year could be your chance, if you have a spare $50,000 or so.

Wow. The $50k price tag won't deter cybersquatters, it will just give a monopoly to the filthy-rich cybersquatters.

I bet every 1 and 2 letter top-level domain is registered within a year even if the price is $100k each.

Can you imagine owning .qq or .lol?

It's not that simple.

You won't be able to simply pay ICANN and get a TLD.

That is only true to an extent, you could propose domain TLD's before this and just had to provide a decent reason why it should be made.

From the sounds of it they will review each application.
But i would guess, if john had all the money needed, and if he had a few decent sites he would use it on, i would think they would allow it.

They may review each application, but there are a lot of other issues to be considered.

Stability is an important thing and they're already worried about the stability of at least one gTLD registry operator

i think thats what they want to avoid, im kind of in the middle with this i think its fantastic that this kind of thing is getting "easier" and would really be a fantastic thing, and would help everyone identify a type of site alot easier, especially as almost anything uses a .com now a days. (off topic random thought: is there a .blog? that would really be a sensible domain really... ) but then again of course about 75% ... 85% ... 95% of people on the internet are well frankly idiots. They are either the "general" home user, spammers who *think* they know it all, few people in the middle, and then you have people (of which i include a handful of out rightly decent guys (and gals) on this forum) who have a clue, know how it works but in most cases cant make a change, or at least one which impacts the whole internet. I guess the internet will always be one of those great things which could just be amazing without silly people. but at the same time allow decent silly people the chance to play their part and learn to be one of the clever decent people.

If that made any sense you probably a minority.. confused me a little when i read it back! >< lol.

My er $2.00 lol (see what i did there?)
Dan

P.S. I think i might read up a little more and blog about this... lol
