Hi I'm after some information on how to change my domain name. My website is BallerProfiles.com which I've had up for a few months now but I'm wanting to change it to BallerConnection.com. I've tried forwarding my name servers on BallerConnection.com but my host hasn't picked it up. Is there something I'm missing here. Thanks

If your hosting account is set up under BallerProfiles.com you need to do a little more than point BallerConnection.com at it. Some hosting accounts won't let you host more than one site on the same account, but more than likely yours does allow it.

You have to set up the new site through your hosting control panel assuming it's allowed. Usually the new site gets created as a subdomain of your main site, though to all outward appearances it will display as a separate domain.

Look in your hosting control panel for Add On Domains. You'll want to set up BallerConnection.com as an Add On domain and then it will likely appear as a subfolder of the root directory, though you may be allowed to point it directly to the root directory. If you have to use a subfolder you'll need to copy all your files into that folder.

Once you know the new domain is working you'll want to redirect the old domain to point to the new domain.

The other option is to call your hosting company and see if they can change the domain on the account to use the new one instead of the old one.

Mace sure that addon domains are included in your plan and then add another one as adon and launch 301 redirect to save SEO benefits as well as save traffic

Thanks for the help, its only 2 letters longer so I'm willing to sacrifice that for a better domain name.

Its a better fit for what I'm trying to accomplish which is to connect basketball players together both locally and internationally.

Add-on domains are used when you have two domains and you want them to link to different places, or "websites". An add-on domain will need a sub directory from which to pull files when it's loaded in the browser.

Example: you have google.com and yahoo.com. You want google.com to point to public_html/ while you want yahoo.com to point to public_html/yahoo

A parked domain is used when you have two domains and you want them to link to the same place.

Example: you have google.com and google-search.com. You want both of these to point to public_html/

Both features should be available in your control panel.

No attitude,
I just fail to understand how people have so little respect for their members/users that they decide to change something so fundamental but meaningless in the overall picture.

The site is a few months old and honestly if my members were as sensitive as you (which they aren't) and were disrespected (lol wtf) by a name change I wouldn't want them on my site anyway. To me the name is 10x better than the previous one, thats all that matters.

Rather than change your name, and loose any traffic, you should keep them both and overlap them onto the same point.

The only question is does your host support this. I see lots of posts that say ADD-ON DOMAIN, but actually its a parked domain since he wants to point it to the same location. So ask your host if they support parked domains, if they do just give them the domain and tell them to park it, set your nameservers to the same as the other domain name and they both will resolve to the same point.

ALSO, the term add-on domain is not used in some panels and some circles, so that may confuse some hosts that do not use those, like hsphere where the term does not exist. take care.

Setup a domain pointer rather than a redirect or add-on domain.
