Is Gandi.net a good registrar?

Hi, I'm looking to set up a few websites for me and some friends. After bad experiences with some other registrars I'm considering Gandi.net. They seem to be pretty good from what I've heard, not likely to die suddenly or suspend your domain if you do something they don't like.

One thing I don't like is that they have really bad tech support. I've emailed them a couple times to try to ask questions and all I get back are really useless boilerplate answers.

Like, one of my friends whose stuff I might be hosting is an artist who sometimes draws nude or explicit sexual stuff (not that explicit, but not PG-13, and no, not pedophile or fetish crap, just artsy stuff). I asked Gandi if that would be all right and their answer was, uh,

"As owners of the domain name, you are responsible for any and all use of the domain name. Consequently, should the usage of your domain be in violation of our contract or applicable local laws, particularly those of France, with regards to copyright we will be obliged to take all necessary measures to assure that we are in full compliance with the law."

Which doesn't answer my question at all. So I guess I have to research French laws for obscure notes on whether websites are allowed to host nude/sexual drawings?

How about other people, how have your experiences been with Gandi.net? I'd like to know before I sign up with them, unhelpful tech support and all.

Hi parema. If you're looking for top-notch service check out Godaddy. I have personally used Godaddy and they are definitely my favorite. So, if you've had bad experiences so far try my recommendation. These are the best deals going and they're all working. Just put them in the source code box at checkout to see the discount.

RRTV1 - 10% off
RRTV2 - $5 off orders of $30 or more
RRTV3 - .COM's for only $7.49 (a 30% discount off regular prices!)

Let me know how things go for you.

For domain's registrar I just used Godaddy and Moniker.

That is my first time I here about them - please do not get offended. I'm guessing maybe they are new at all and do they have accreditation (each domain name registrar should have that).

They've actually been around since 1999 and from what I've heard about them they have a really good TOS and really crappy tech support.

As for other options, I cooled on GoDaddy after hearing about all the horror stories people had with them (see nodaddy.com). I've heard Moniker, like Gandi.net, has so-so tech support.

What you host on the site is absolutely nothing to do with the registrar.

The laws of the land where the hosting server is located apply, and the TOS of the hosting company are what determine what you can host there.

If that's absolutely unequivocally true, it removes the whole issue. Can someone link me to an official source on that, saying that registrars aren't allowed to suspend/cancel domain registrations based on content?

Sorry to sound doubtful, but I want to be certain, because I heard pretty much the opposite before. Like these stories with Godaddy, how they as a registrar sometimes suspend the domains of sites that host content they don't like. The hosting company has nothing to do with it.

I would suggest that is simply GoDaddy considering they are more important than anybody else.
Just one more good reason not to use them.

I believe GoDaddy is the best place to register domains. It's an easy process and the customer service is great. Prices are good and coupon codes are scattered throughout the internet.

Even I am hearing for the first time. Just checked ICANN's List of Accredited Registrar..http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/a...fied-list.html
and they are one among them..

Always heard about Go Daddy, Tucows, ResellerClub.....
