How does one go about doing this? I know it can be done, but right now it isn't that advantageous of a business move to spend a few thousand dollars for this.

Its really useless seeing if you were to actually do this you would know how its done. The amount of things needed is very complex and simply can not be condensed into a "simple how-to weekend dyi project".

I don't think that's possible, I mean u could go through someone else n be a reseller for lack of a better word. I would start reselling hosting, I almost did it once...with a super clean site n seo work it is possible to be on your way to owning a profitable hosting company...Sell domains with reseller hosting....Thats what I would recommend.

I agree, you cant be a registrar with out iccan accreditation but you can become a reseller.

Because being domain name registrar and providing domain name registration services are 2 different things, but not for the end users of course

I agree. Reselling that is the ONLY legal way to go. There are plenty of the domain name reseller packages over there. I suppose that will not be difficult to find decent one for you

The value of a single Domain Name for a domainer is more than x times its value to his Registrar. Hence, the prime concern for a domainer is to have complete dominance over his/her domain portfolio, especially in light of recent events like price hike etc...

Have comes across "Logic Boxes" - who are into ICANN Accreditation Consultancy for aspiring registrars and business automation solutions for existing ICANN Accredited Registrar Companies.

All you need to have is a system from where you can connect to the registry's API...and that it seems is the biggest issue when it comes to becoming a registrar & logicboxes is the best option if you do not have your own system..they also do a feasibility check and suggest if accreditation is a suitable option for you or not..

Not possible to become a Registrar without ICANN. If you don't want to go down that route, then as others mentioned look into a domain reseller account so you can resell domains from which is the cheapest way to go.

If it's not possible, how would someone that showed me a whois record for a domain have their company as the registrar? He says he's not ICANN accredited, and won't tell me how he did it, but I saw it. Don't have the example anymore but I know what I saw!

Are you sure that you saw the his Company Name in the "Registrar" field cause certain Registrar's also provide something called as "Registration Service provider in the Whois details ..which ideally is the Reseller/Distributor's Name..

Well,

You can not become a "registrar" without ICANN
You do can become a reseller of a registrar. You just buy a reseller account on an ICANN Registrar and you register the domains that you are asked for the clients.

Being a reseller will allow you to provide an independent username and password to each user so they can administrate their domains.
