.com is better. But if you can register all domain names.

.com is the most popular domain type and I recommend going with .com is possible. However, other extensions like .net, .org or .biz are OK too.

Not everyone. We had many pre-sale questions like "Can I host site like xyz? with you?"
Usually we go to xyz.com and if it's fine, we confirm that such a site can be hosted here. Then customer goes to order page and enters his domain as xyz.info, xyz.biz or similar...

If you can find a .com that would be the best otherwise if you can't, others like .net or .us will do just fine as well.

I would go with a .com or .net if both are taken I would think of another domain name but that's simply me.

Personally my first preference would always be .com followed by .net and finally .org
The reason being that .com is without a doubt the most universally established domain extension, for even the least net savvy users .com means something.
Also in my opinion there is a certain bias held by many against certain extensions such as .info or .biz (not sure about .us). Whilst these domain extensions are probably considered incorrectly by many to be spammer domains (I'm sure in reality the bulk ratio of spam will come from .com domains) this does mean that a fair percentage of users will regard these extensions negatively and a trust issue like that in my eyes isn't a good start for any website, especially if its due to the very first thing a user interacts with...the url.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I couldn't have said it better. As far as ranking goes, does not matter but it's "easier" for the human if it's a .com followed by .net or .org if the .com is not available.

Those are domain extensions. And it's not really a big deal which one you choose. Google doesn't favor any specific domains. Most general sites use the .com extension, .biz for business, .us for US-based sites, etc.

From a functional perspective, it really doesn't matter which you choose.
However if the .com is available in the name you want, I would certainly choose that first.

It seems that question was asked because .COM domain name is not availible for OP and I suppose that is the only reason he started seeking for the alternatives

I don't see how that is directly indicated anywhere in his post. It's certainly a possibility.. but not necessarily the case. Many non-tech-geeks don't realize the value in a .com over a .net or .us.

from a marketing standpoint choosing .com is the most recognizable to "non-tech" people.

I believe any web site (with any domain name extension) might be be more sucessful in marketing then the one with com, because domain name extension does not influence on it in any way
