I'm new to the boards and relatively new at offering my own hosting services. I've been designing and developing websites for quite some time but never really took much interest in buying domain names.
Talked to a friend the other day, he said buying and reselling domain names is "10 years ago". While I think maybe I disagree, but unsure.
What do you think? Is it worth buying domains for resell or no?
If you intend to use them, yes it is. But if you are just buying them in the hope that some fool will turn up and pay thousands for it, you'll be wasting your money.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds
Thought for today:- Is SEO the only industry where all the cowboys are Indians?
I had figured it would be like that but figured I'd get some others opinions as well.
A couple months ago I bought ourwebmedia.com - Do you think there would be any chance in me ever being able to sell that or should I just use it for my own personal website? Been debating it for a bit. Thanks for the advice.
It's possibly a brandable name but it will take a fair bit of work.

That is what domains do. That is not domain name reselling. If you want to resell domain names you need to open the reseller account.
I believe you are mixing the things up a bit.
What if you register domain name and no one is interested in the domain name?

Reselling domain name registration service and reselling domain name are 2 diffrent things and involves diffrent sums of money to get started. Which one do you like to start with?
This particular 'industry' has definitely fallen on tough times. However decent domains will still fetch a good value. It's more of a 'side' business IMO.

I really dont see domain flipping near as profitable as it once was. It's very hard these days to find good domains that people are willing to spend good money on. They best bet is turn that domain into a site with PR then sell it on ebay. Lots of those are selling on ebay.

I'm sure people just do not want to spend more and that's it
I firmly believe that there are many opportunities still out there where you can make some money. But the best of the best were taken long ago. I'd recommend to buy a few and try to flip them if you want, but would not buy many without development imho.

ditto that. Within the last year I looked into the domain reselling biz and it just didn't seem like it would be as profitable as it once was. With anything in life, opportunities exist you may just have to look much harder for them...
good luck..

I always thought sub-domains were the 'bomb' back in the day...I would rather have one domain, and do the sub-domain thing. Save a buck, especially with the economic crisis were in...That's IF you really need a premium domain that much.

Nice idea. But the problem is that subdomain name are not attractive for the buyers once you decide to sell it
