domain name stolen. how is it possible?

This is my first post in Webmaster-Talk.
Recently I have a domain name loss. The story started when I began to look for a domain name suitable for a site I was building. I used a domain registering site to check domain availability of my candidates. Among lots of the candidates, I found a good one available. However, because it's too good, since I'm not a native English user, I'm not 100% sure if the grammar is correct and you guys do use the words that way, I didn't register the domain name right away. After two weeks, when I came back, I found that the domain name has been registered.
The domain name was registerd the same day I checked its availability. And the creation date and update date are the same. I think it means the domain name was registered for the first time. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)
I wouldn't believe that it's a coincidence. The person who registered the domain must have known my checking the domain name. Then because he believed that the domain is worthy, he took it.
But how is that possible? Is it possible that a person can monitor domain name checks? Are there domain registering phishing sites?
The domain registering site I used was: domainsite.com.
I'm looking forward to an answer. Any comment will be welcomed.

I have heard that people can monitor domain name searches, im sure they do but i am not positive, the best thing to do it wait to search for a domain name when you are ready to buy it.
I use godaddy to search for domain names and i have found a few good ones in the past and they were never registered so maybe use godaddy to search for domain names.

Hello!
Dear alewela!
Please dont try these sites (like 1and1.com, domainsite.com etc) to search the availablity of domain! Such Websites buy the domain when it is checked for availablity So that you then have to bid and give more money to them of their demand!
Just write the domain you want into the browser, if it come with "PAGE CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED, SERVER NOT FOUND", then there are 90% chances that the domain is available!
then if you have to buy then go directly to a trusted site like godaddy and buy!

Some times ago, network solutions have been in a media storm for a similar practice.
In short, when you checked a domain for availability, they would reserve it for 5 days.
So, if you tried to register with another registrar, you would have a message that the domain is already bought.

Maybe those people at domainsite are using the same method.
I'd recommend you to do a simple whois lookup instead of using the registrar interfaces.

Thank you all for the input.
loverboy420:
I'm surprised to hear that even 1and1 does such things. They seem to have good reputation. So who on earth are trustworthy besides godaddy?
tripy:
Thank you for the link. It's informative.
The domain name was not reserved. It was registered. The creation date and update date I mentioned were retrieved via whois service from domaintools.com.

They do believe in all domain name they pick up. That is their job. he just pick up the domain name in case. To sell it.

Through deeper investigation, I found that domainsite's own domain name, "domainsite.com" is for sale. You can check that on domaintools.com.
I believe that no *normal* domain registrar sells its own domain.
The conclusion is: DomainSite is a scam.

It's not a loss and it is not stolen.
"Spot Domain LLC" who are the parent company of "domainsite" are host name resellers, so it's not surprising they would have their own "properties" up for sale to the fool with the deepest pockets.

Though I don't agree with you about "it's not stolen", this information is really helpful.

Stolen means deprived of ownership or taken without the owners consent.
You were never the "owner" of the hostname, you were merely considering ownership of said "property".
Sure, it's a shady, underhand practice, but it is like being second in line to buy that 56" TV for $10 in the New Year sale, if you don't pay the money first, you don't get it! The other person didn't "steal" it, you were just too slow.

If you think that there are some illegal actions from the side of domain name registrar I suppose you always can contact the ICANN and leave abuse

While I do have GoDaddy mostly for when I win domains on Ebay, my preference for new domains is Dynadot.
I have used the Dynadot search to check the same list of domains quite often, just to make sure I can still get them.
I am yet to have the experiences of the opening post in this thread. So, I will say Dynadot search would be worth it.
However, after reading this post, I am going to think twice about checking these domains before I am ready to buy them.

Is it true that others can steal your own DOMAIN name???
Via Hacked????????????
But you paid for that domain isn't it? therefor you may have the terms and conditions of what you paid. and there are "I agree questions right?"
and did the web not tells you if the domain is available or not?

this is an interesting thread. I've actually heard that the *only* place you can check for availability and not have any underhanded practices going on with domain name "stealing" is 1and1. I've heard of problems like this of several others, including (and especially) godaddy.
So searching manually via the web until you decide for sure on a name is probably a pretty good idea....
