Not very good - theres no keywords - meaning it doesnt have any intrinsic value.

Even with "keywords" a hostname has NO "intrinsic" value at all!!

Well, I disagree entirely, for one the domain name "vodka" is a keyword. Therefore if you own it you're branding your website as Vodka automatically.

Now a word like fluin, whats a fluin?
Unless it's a service people can't live without like "Google",twitter, blogger then its doomed to fail

its alot harder to convince google a website named fluin is about vodka than it is convincing google a website named vodka is abotu vodka.

That does NOT give it "intrinsic" value.
It may influence the price some fool would pay for it once developed, but it does not mean it is worth xx (in whatever currency)

Don't be ridiculous. It's only a short sighted lack of imagination that make people believe they MUST HAVE a keyword in the hostname.
ANYONE who can't see a way to brand ANY kind of hostname shouldn't be in marketing or promotion.

Do you suppose that Brin and Page thought "We simply HAVE to be "agreatsearchengine.com" that Jeff Bezos thought "buybooks.com" will make it easy to get customers, or Pierre Omidyar registered "onlineauction.com"?

Any hostname can be BRANDED, you simply need the flair and imagination to do so.

whoa! I don't want to start a war here lol but I must say, it's a very interesting convo. I had a brief lesson in IP (intellectual property) in the past and this was one of the topics... in short Apple makes computers and not apples

And thanks for the feedback =)

Thanks for the feedback! I'm building as we speak... but I'm not sure what to make lol I'm thinking of making a twitter type site... I still can't believe they became so popular from something that simple (it'd take me a day to make a clone of twitter)

It does depend on what on the website is about. If you think about all the major sites that have chosen a brand name IE Google, Yahoo, MySpace, FireFox, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc etc they all have only 2 syllables. There may be something in that to consider.

Also, they roll off the tongue somehow.

Its true that the success of a website is going to come out of things other than domain name choice, BUT in the beginning using that intrinsic keyword value can help you get rolling, so long as the competition for your website/keyword is not huge.

But Chris is right, your website should be a success for other reasons, not simply your domain name choice.

I suppose that could be good domain name for the online shop. Why not?
Worth to develop this domain name - do not sell it.

I guess it's 2 syllables and it's also really short (5 characters). I'm just wondering... what kind of keywords would bring people to something like twitter?

I would create an online shop if I could be successful with online shops... I can never seem to sell anything. Okay I won't sell it, thanks for the tip.

I'm going to insult most of you at one go here but I would say the same thing to you if we were face to face, and I've never cared if anybody "likes me" or not! They can take me as I am (or not).

I simply cannot believe the stupidity that so many of you exhibit!!!

There are NO "keywords" that send people to Twitter, ebay, Amazon, MySpace, FaceBook etc.

It is BRANDING that sends visitors to these places!!!

The NAME itself has BECOME the keyword.

Let me explain branding to you "marketers"

You take a name and make it synonomous with a product or service.

"Video Rental" how many of you saw "Blockbusters" when you read that? did you think "Freds Video Shack" which is three doors down from your house? No? what a surprise!

Burger? McDonalds or "Burger King"

Chicken? Yep, let's go to KFC.
B R A N D I N G is what REALLY sells products NOT keywords.

The keyword domains driving mass traffic is for the MFA numbnutts.

Take your chosen name and BRAND it to the service, Promote it, advertise it (yep that's right spend some MONEY!!, get it into the psyche of the people you want to attract.
Sure you can p!ss about with penny-ante stuff like forum link dropping, blog "commenting", "social media" spamming and the usual junk.

BUT if you want to be at least moderately successful then you have to WORK at it.

that is... unless you put a positive spin on it

besides, for most ppl if you hear it or see it you're most likely to think
"flowing" or "fluid" (based on surveys i conducted so far) before thinking of "flu"
