Some key things for domain names always try to make it short and sweet. Also words that are easy to spell. Make it unique to yourself or your business and not generic imo that looks better.

^Same as he says, make it as short and easy to remember as possible, ignore the idiots who say you need keywords in your domain name, google ignored them, wiki ignored them, youtube ignored them, yahoo ignored them, ebay ignored them, the list is endless.

An interesting idea I've seen lately is how a freelance photographer uses your phone number as a domain name. It would be a little difficult to remember, however.

just come up with something catchy..but still its the way you promote it that makes it more visible over the internet...

your personal name if you are a designer

I know some people are against long domain names, but in this case I think it could be good because you want your name out there and the keywords web designer in the domain. You could also use your company name. I guess it depends on how long your name is. Examples

scottsmithwebdesigner.com

smithwebdesigning
