Here's my problem. I have a really effective keyword (death insurance) that has the exact opposite meaning of my main line of business.

My SEO friends are saying that this is potentially a huge issue as life and death are related, synonyms, but my domain and internal pages are "life" three times in the URL.

If I was to split off to another domain with the same structure it should rank much better for people looking for death coverage?

Would you take a really active keyword and make a new domain for it if it's the opposite meaning of the words in your current domain and not in any urls?

If you mean your business is very pro life related and you want to add a death domain to get better page ranking, then I personally think you can't know until you try.

It is really all trial and error with these things I think and if it really helps you out, why not. I don't know how well it can be received though by your users that you have a very negative domain.

You are talking about mystery things which have nothing to do for real life. You may have any domain name, but that will never improve or hurt your SEO.

Hmm. I'm not SEO expert. But I was always suggested to improve my web site and back links not domain name. So I believe domain name is not so important for SEO.

For goodness sake

If people use that phrase to find your site who are you to argue with that??????

They are OBVIOUSLY searching for life assurance (as you cannot INSURE against the inevitable)

Keywords in the URL are NOT, NOT , NOT an important factor, so why on earth would you want to start all over again with a fairly uselees domain name when what you have now is apparently getting the RIGHT traffic??

I agree with chris but I have found that google pay some importance to the keyword but I have not found this with other search engine.
Any way even for google it doesnt matter that much

In Australia it's grim but applicable to search for "death cover" just as much as it is to look for "life cover", and Google agrees. So we can't ignore that keyword, but I had an SEO saying that there is relevance between keywords and domain name?

Like if I wanted to sell wagon wheels and there was a site called "wagonwheels.com" and you're competing with "cartires.com" it's much harder and you'd be better to start a new site as "wagonwheelsforless.com" or something to avoid conflicts. Plus he says that you can only split a site up so many ways before you lose strength passed through the site so if you have two very focused sites it's better for competing than one varied site?

Not much of an "SEO" then.

Nope
Quite honestly he/she is talking complete drivel!

It's the typical brainless waffle of the link begging mindset where the only page you promote is the "home" page and everything filters down from there.

It does not strike these shortsighted idiots that you CAN and SHOULD promote, market and obtain links to ANY and EVERY page or section of the site.

Selling tyres and wheels? Promote the tyre section and the WHEEL section of the site. That way the generic marketing AND BRANDING of the site in general (home page) REINFORCES the marketing of the specific areas!
