Point one domain to another domain?

I'm not really a good webmaster. I use a program on my Mac to design my website. Anyway, here's my question. A couple of years ago I purchased a domain name through network solutions. I found a hosting company where I uploaded all of my files to. I changed my Name Servers to what my hosting company gave me and when I uploaded my files, my website appears properly when I type that domain in my web browser.

Recently, I decided to have a company design a website for me. They purchased a domain for me and set it all up on their own server. Well, that website is done and it's "live." It looks good. However, I want my original website too to point to the new website that the company I hired to design for me. However, I can't get it!! The company said that all I had to do was change the name servers which they gave me. I went into Network Solutions and changed the name servers from my hosting company to the new name servers. It was like that for a couple of days and the website never came up. Kept getting "cannot display webpage." Then I was reading online that you can change the A name record with the IP address. So I went into my network solutions account and changed the A name record to the IP address of the new website. That's been like that for a day now and the webpage is still not coming up. The company that designed my new site isn't much help. What am I doing wrong?? It's frustrating. All I want is my original site domain to point to the new domain whenever someone types my original website name into their browser. Please help.

It can take up to four days for DNS changes to propagate

Understood about the number of days. However, I guess I'm wondering, even if I waited 4 days, how would me changing the DNS server name (NS1. and NS2.) to the name server of the new website, make people typing in my "old" website, come up with the new website?? I think there is something wrong somewhere.
