I saw many times the situation when several domains are used for the same website. A common sense can be easily understood when for example different domains are used to demonstrate website pages are presented in several languages! But personally I don’t understand for which purposes the same website is made available under different domains in other cases? What advantages can be taken from displaying a website under different domains?

the advantages are if people visit the "different domains" you get the traffic too..but you need to pays for each of "different domains".

usually if people buy a domain name for a company they buy all other TLD..
for example..Company A buy "companya.com"..then buy "companya.net" and "companya.org" etc.
companies buy other TLD too.. so other people won't be able to abuse them(such as pishing) or anything that they don't want to happen..
some companies won't care to spend some money on buying other domains

Well several domain names for a website would bring traffic to your site though payment is supposed to be done for every domain name.

usually people purchase multiple domain names to protect their brand.. so they are purchsing

name.com
name.net
name.co
name.info
name.me

And be sure yo put a 301 Redirect to all secondary domain names. Don't let them all show your site, just redirect to the primary one
