Why would you pay for something so useless?

Domain names are "worth" one of two things the registration fee or what some fool will pay for it.

No matter what some "appraisal" suggests, it is worth nothing at all until you find somebody willing to pay the suggested price.

I feel a lot of "fools" would be more likely to buy a domain that your selling for £XXXX if the number one domain registrar in the world has performed a "certified appraisal" which tells them that the domain is indeed worth £XXXX

if a customer wants something and you make them believe its worth the price your asking then they will pay that price for it.

A bit like con artist who makes their mark believe that the "plot of land in Florida" they are selling is valuable.

So are you saying domains have no value?

The value is what the person thinks of it.

If someone purchased a TLD which is your name, eg. "marcSurname.com" , and you want it to start a personal website about yourself, you might pay more than what the person purchased it for. When another person sees the domain, they might think it's worthless because that's not their name.

Indeed. Domain value is virtual and relative. It may cost few bucks but someone is read to pay a few thousands for it.

Go to namepros forum. There are many domain geeks around there.

A most emphatic YES!!

They have no intrinsic value.
It is like works of art. The painting of Whistler's mother is valuable now simply because it was painted by Whistler, ~140 years ago and collectors will pay almost anything for it.
When he painted it it was only worth what the materials cost.

Van Gogh paintings will sell for a hundred million dollars at the minimum simply because someone will pay that. When he painted them they were worth the price of a loaf of bread.

Your grandmothers wedding ring might be of inestimable value to you, to everybody else it's worth the scrap value of the gold.

Domain selling is a buyers market the purchasers determine the final price NOT the seller, you may have a figure in mind of what YOU deem "acceptable", but if nobody offers you that figure you will have to lower your expectations.

Nothing in the domain that interests me. If I am in a good, then i'll be not paying more than $40 for this one!

Very nicely put. The value of a domain is based on demand. It is worthless if no one wants it. Registration fee is pretty straight forward.
