Network Solutions, that's what I use to search. You can look up multiple domain names at once.

I use name.com for available domains

If its taken, I then use Dynanot.com to check the owner of the domain

I think when you register a domain, you can just type in the name you want and any site will tell you if it is available or not. That is the easiest way.

You can check the most frequently keywords for the type of website you wish to have and then making a few combinations you can pick a domain name from it.

Don't forget to check out a lot of the domain reselling sites. A lot of people are selling off their domains constantly so some domains there may interest you. Just take ownership of the domain and transfer it to a registrar you are comfortable with.

You can undertake a competitive analysis to get knowledge of the keywords that are top in the list. For a good domain name its important that it contains the keyword for your business/service.
