Hello,

Maybe a Dumb question but what happens If I have a domain name register with a company and that registrar goes down (goes out of business), what happens to my domain? Do I still own it? Do I still get to keep it? How will I renew it?

thanks.

If you registered your domain name, it's still yours and it's probably listed with the Whois database. Go here to check it out. Just type in your domain name and see if you are listed as the owner.

Once your domain comes up for renewal, I'm sure you can use any other domain registrar to renew your domain name as long as you are listed as the legal owner.

Hope this helps,
DianeD

Chances are, the company you bought your domain from is a reseller for a larger ICANN accredited registrar. So if the company you buy from goes out of business, your domain is still available and you would have to deal directly with the parent company. The odds of the parent company going out of business is pretty slim and I wouldn't worry about it.

Just make sure you are listed as the admin contact for your domain. This way if anything happens, you will have the ability to move it to a new registrar without having to deal with the company you bought the domain from.

Ya, Anacrusis is correct on this one. If the parent company were to go out of business, you would probably have to contact ICANN, but this would be very very unlikely.
