I think this could be a case of violation of eBay's Trademark. I am not sure though so I would suggest you to be absolutely sure about it before proceeding.

They tryed to shut a web sitedown called shmeebay but it was a discussionboard

the creator wrote" they state that because my site is a discussion site about eBay (technically it's trying to forum all Ebay Sellers into a Union) and talks about eBay and has the word ebay in the domain name, that they have the right to bring it down. so if i named my site ChesapekeBay.com or TheBayofPigs.com and talked about eBay, they can also take me down?"

From the above mentioned example of shmeebay its clear that they have an objection if the word 'ebay' is in a domain which does not belong to them. I don't think you are absolutely safe using that domain name for your site.

Yes I do think this name has potential and the site on this name can be catchy and get enough in for web traffic.

And as soon as it does ebay will probably force you to take it down.

My take is that it sounds like a site that is associated with eBay, and of course
you are not. If I went to the site I would leave because I would feel that you
were being dishonest from the very beginning.

You see, If I want information from eBay I will go to eBay or a close affiliate. If I
want info about eBay from someone else that is what I would look for. So this
domain name does not take me to a site that I would trust. you tricked me and I
will leave.

I think that most eBay users are smart. You will not fool anyone except yourself
by using such a domain name.

You are not eBay so let that be known. A domain name does not make for a
great site. Great content and a great business model make for a
great/profitable web site. You can have 200,000 hits a day, but if everyone
leaves as soon as they see that you are not what they thought you were--
Those 200,000 hits are just costing you money in dead traffic.

Build a great web site mms and you will be successful (there are no short cuts).
This domain name is going to prove to you more harm than good... The issue
here is not if eBay is going to sue you. The issue is just good business sense.

...IMO... and my opinion is dead right in this case...

You asked mms!

My take on this is that your domain name sounds like it is a sub-domain of ebay.
The domain goofbay.com does not sound in any way like it is a sub-domain.
When I see goofbay.com, I picture a site that is going to give me info of some
form about using ebay.

When I see ebay.me.uk it looks like an ebay subdomain. Personally, I feel that
when most people get to your site, on the basis of the domain name and see
that it doesn't have a real affiliation with ebay, I would be untrusting of the info
on your site. I would feel that you have tried to mislead me from the very
beginning by making me think that you are affiliated with ebay.

Like I said. You asked. Did you ask because you were looking for approval, or
did you ask because you want honest answers..?

I have a strong background in both usability and marketing . The domain you
picked "ebay.me.uk" does note bode well for branding.

No doubt you plan on building a great site that will be effective. Your desire to
do it right is evident in your posts here.

But. ...a few points to think about...
(1) a medicre domain name isn't going to help or hurt
(2) a great domain name can help a lot
(3) a bad domain name can ruin your business

That's my view.. take it or leave it!

Shane your last post is the first time you mention content at all. That's the reason no one else here has mentioned it. When I read your posts it sounds to me like your plan is to have a catchy name to bring as much traffic as possible and then to serve AdSense or something similar to make money. My guess is that your archive of turorials is also content you will find elsewhere and not write yourself.

I'm not saying this is your plan. I don't know what your plans for the domain are. Neither does anyone else here really. What you asked is what we though of the domain name and we all offered our opinions. Our opinions aren't necessarily right. I'm sure we've all been wrong before. I know I have in the past and I'm sure I'll be wrong again.

I think any domain has potential. It's what you do with that domain that will make it successful. Would anyone have thought 10 years ago that google.com would drive traffic. Probably not, but the site behind that domain seems to bring in quite a few people every day.

I did not mean to rain on your parade. You asked. I answered.

I just wanted you to understand that the people who own trademarks are not going to let anyone else profit from them.

Actually they can't allow it. If they can not demonstrate that they have vigourously enforced their right to the trademark they lose it.

Now the question becomes who has more money for lawyers? You or them?

Well i purchased ebay.me.uk against everyone telling me not to,
I sold it today for £200 which to me is cheap but people are scared to buy it due to ebay, anyway the buyer is well aware of how ebay can be tight on that stuff so yay, I did good.
Pitty i cant get more sales like this!

pitty I have nothing to show for £200, maybe shame shane into sendinding me the nominet forms it will soon be 2months!!

When people want to visit ebay, they type ebay.com, not ebay.me.uk. So no, I don't think it is a site with potential. It's also dishonest and irritating to people who are looking for ebay and find a page that has nothing to do with it. Not to mention that you're also asking for trouble from Ebay. I'm guessing they have more legal pull and money to come after you, then you do to fight them.
