There are appear to be too many thou shall not in selecting domain names that one wonder what thou shall do. A search on "how to select a domain name" came up with 288,000 entries
The concern should be what is legal so as to avoid lawsuits. As many in this forum have said, a short name is always better. Though .com is still best, one should not shy away from .net and .org especially when these fit the business model bearing in mind the original designation of .com, .net and .org.
When the name is already taken, a prefixed or abriviated form or even initials may be considered - ibm.com, kfc.com, fedex.com, ihop.com, ... etc. The ability to create a brand from the domain name should be looked into as this is very important. Names like yahoo, google, ebay, monster and amazon are not really meaningful but for the ability of there respective owners to brand the names.
Good luck.
