I would like fellow members opinions on buying .mobi domains? Do you think that the .mobi will become the .com of the future..especially if you can buy the "keywords" .modi thanks for your responses

Of course not, .com will always be the top domain. No matter what. Also .mobi is restricted to mobile phones. I don't think the phone industry plans on making a 'new' .com. The closest thing to .com is .net, .org, and .info in that order. Mobi will probably stay close to the bottom of the list.

Thanks for your opinion...I really don't know what to think recently I read that there were several 6-figure .mobi domain sales, including Flowers.mobi for $200,000, Sportsbook.mobi for $129,800, and Fun.mobi for $100,000...and what make me think that it might be the next .com is that .mobi domain names were only made available for public registration on September 26, 2006....now those are incredible sales for less than a year

Sure there are. That will happen with any TLD which is unregulated by any serious governing body (ICAN'T notwithstanding)...speculators will quickly grab whatever domains they can, and turn around and sell them to dotbomb corporate idiots and other speculators who think they can take their six-digit investments and make even MORE money off of the domain names either by reselling them or by becoming the final idiot at the bottom of the pyramid who thinks that they can drive millions of dollars' worth of customers to their ultra-cool .MOBIle-friendly site (conveniently forgetting that less than 1/10th of a percent use devices like that in the process.)

In other words, they're figures that are artificially inflated by stupidity and the bubble will burst. It's just a matter of time.

I don't really understand you are saying 1/10th of a percent? Are we not talking about people viewing webpages on a "mobile device" like pda's..cellphones....I am pretty sure that there were alot more people using PDA's, cellphone today than last year and I am pretty sure that the growth of the industry will continue
and isn't some big companies like Google, Microsft, Nokia, Sansung Electronics among a few other...financially backing .mobi

Yes, people are accessing the internet with moblie devices more than last year, and I do expect that number to go up dramatically with the release of the iPhone, but people will always use a computer more than their mobile device for use of the internet. Maybe in another 100 years mobile devices might get half the internet use compared to desktops, but I do doubt it. It is just easier to use a desktop with a nice big screen compared to a 2x2 inch screen and a big keyboard compared to little buttons (although I do think Vista comes with voice recognition so this obviously shows that the industry is probably going to start to steer away from the keyboard slightly sooner or later but not until voice recognition is powerful and cheap enough).
If you really think .mobi is the new .com go ahead and think it. Remember I may be completely wrong and am just holding on to how it has been but bias aside I do think .com will always be the largest TLD.

You're probably right. It probably will grow. It can't get much smaller.

But you're joining two items that at best are tangentally related. A domain name that is INTENDED for mobile use doesn't mean that it WILL be used for mobile use. .COM isn't always used for commercial use. .NET isn't often used for networks (ask any poker site about that). And when was the last time you saw a .TV domain owned by a resident of Tuvalu?

All that the growth of PDA usage means is that we'll eventually have to start paying more attention to them and eventually work CSS for PDA into our regular daily coding lives. But we're a long way from seeing that day.

Valid points ADAM Web Design and Mattmaul1992...just one last thought, regarding mobile devices aren't some laptops mobile (wireless) wouldn't laptop fall into the same categories as PDA's and cellphones?
Anyway, should I invest in some .modi names to resell at a future date? I keep thinking of those lucky guy, you bought .com a few years back for next to nothing and re sold them for a substantial profit...

Some laptops (primarily the newer ones) contain wireless network cards. However, the screens on such laptops tend to range between 12.4" - 17" (I think...that's a ballpark.) The video cards on those laptops also have a minimum resolution of 800 x 600 (and quite often more.) So they're not in the same class as a PDA device, although yes they are "mobile".

Sometimes just to make big publicity stunts these type of news are created to attract possible buyers. If you have some sure-shot information about this TLD then you can opt for investing in one of them as there are a lot of different TLD’s in the present internet market today and we can’t compare the old times when just .com was present where people had invested in them. The present scenario for investing in a new TLD has completely changed today.
