Hi All

I have the choice of registering a two word name on either .biz or .info. I can only really do one so what would you suggest is the more valuable? Dont mean to ask how long it a bit of string just wondering what you would choose.

Imagine the names woodenhammers

Thanks

In all honesty I think a .com domain even if you need to dig a little deeper to find one is going to be a better option. Also if you site is country specific I would go with the country extension. For example a British site should definitely have a .co.uk extension though even then I would grab the .com version too and redirect it.

After .com I would go with .net or .org. I don't think many people are aware of .biz or .info and wouldn't purchase one.

I realize I'm not answering your question specifically, but I don't think either .biz or .info is better than the other. Neither is used much and probably isn't the best choice. As yourself when was the last time you typed either into your address bar?

I agree with vangogh, .biz and .info aren't widely known to most people right now. However, given the choice, I would say go with .biz. Though neither extension is all that popular, .biz is probably more popular than .info.

I might get a .biz or .info to go along with a .com and cover all the bases and be prepared for the day if and when they are more common. I just wouldn't use it as a primary domain today.

Im surprised more people don't go for .cc domains. there are still quite a few good short ones left. And although not many people are aware they exist, the .cc is quite memorable once they see it.

Personally..I would choose the .info (short for information) while biz (short for business)..I look at domain "dot names" in this way..in order of preference (1).com (2).net (3).edu (4).org (5).info (6).us (7).biz of course depends on how the domain name "rolls of your tongue" for instance show.biz is better than show.info

briguy your list in order of preference is kind of my point. .info falls 5th for you. I understand that James asked an either or about .info or .biz, but I think the better option is to find something that would work with a .com or .net.

If you tell someone your domain name and they remember it they probably won't remember the extension. They're much more likely to assume .com

Some day we may see .info or .biz TLDs more commonly, but not today. And again I'll ask when was the last time you typed either .info or .biz into your address bar?

Hi guys.

Some good replies so thanks. I was looking for an accommodation related domain name. In the end I managed to find one I liked. Guess what?
Its on .mobi

Doh!!! I though I would go for this as I believe it to be a good .mobi name. Its also probably better than any .biz or .info names I could find. Hopefully its got more future growth potential as well.

I really like the .biz names for things such as www.cleaning.biz I was a total fool as I could have purchased this a few years back but didnt. Please dont tell me its worth loads or recently sold for thousands.

I also like .info names for things like loans.info thats a very vague example. I do own one .info name but the site is still in the build and development stages.

Im not at all as good as I need to be at the moment though for that idea so it might be put on hold while I work on other examples.

Thanks

If I were to choose from .biz or .info I would see that if the site is informative then I would have chosen .info or if it is related to business then .biz but in the recent extensions of domain names .mobi is also a good choice.

James is the site one you expect people to be viewing primarily over a mobile device?

vangogh I sense you about to tell me the choice was a bad one.

Im going to build an accommodation site for the uk. There are several reasons for doing this. One is I need examples of what the sites I intend to build clients will look like, so first I will need the domain to be used to view sites over the PC or Mac.

Since purchasing the name probably without much thought I have decided that eventually it might be a good idea to build it into a site that people would view over their mobil service. I still need to look into this more as I have only just started to look at this option.

I was reading a discussion on here the other day about how popular the .mobi extensions will be. I to think its very obvious that .com is always going to be the best. But trying to enter the online world of business and finding the right .com and .co.uk domain is nearly impossible for popular business like hotels B&B,s.

Im waffling on now sorry. So do you think it was a good choice or not? I assume that the extension will be able to be used in the way I initially want to?

Thanks

James B

James my question wasn't meant to imply the choice was bad. I was more curious than anything else. I think mobile devices are going to be the next big frontier so to speak and I'm interested in learning what I can now so I'm there when it happens.

My thoughts are really what I said in my first post here. Most people will naturally assume .com so it's probably going to be the best extension for everyone. If your site is country specific then the country extension is probably just as good though I would still get the .com.

After those .net and .org have been around since the beginning and can also work well. If I found a good .net I would want it, but I'd also grab the .com if it was available.

I think all other extensions mean you'll have to do a little extra work in marketing. For example with the .mobi you're going to need your customers to remember your doamin and extension. If you have a .com you only need to get them to remember to domain since the extension they will first try most likely is .com

That doesn't mean .mobi is bad. It just means you need to have the understanding that it's important to promote the extension.

Think of a company like Google or Yahoo. Do you see either including the .com in their logo or on their sites? Chances are they own a lot of extensions, but they don't need to tell us what to use.

With extensions other than the big three and the country extensions you most likely do need to include it in all your marketing.

But again it's not necessarily bad. If you have a highly memorable domain with a .mobi extension it might be better than an unmemorable domain with a .com.

Cool. Domains are pretty inexpensive so there's no reason not to have a few. Worst case you decide to drop one and you spent a little money you didn't need to.
