Hello all,

I'm new to this domain name business, but Im tryin to learn as much as I can. I have a couple of questions that hopefully somebody has an answer for. Is it possible to take advantage of a popular domain, using a new extension with the same name?? Lets say, microsoft.com.......and I have something like microsoft.mobi. How could the dot mobi, having no traffic at all take advantage of the dot com popularity?

microsoft.mobi would not be a very good domain to choose because it has TradeMark problems, and you would not be able to keep it.

but regarding to your question .. usually you will have a very little traffic with the same domain in other extension if you do not market it well. That because people when thinking of internet they think of the .com, and the .com gets type - in traffic because people don't search for terms in google but type the word they want directly in their browser followed by the .com.
I don't think you will find in generic tld's (net, org, info, mobi) domains that have very well established sites in the .com.

Hope this helped.

Well then how are regular people making money with domains outside of the dot com? Is it in the marketing of the name....or the extention? Microsoft was an extreme example, but for this.....how would a microsoft.mobi get popular? It has a famous name just an unknown extension? People are'nt going to just type it in...so how is it done. Is it through the search engines? I dont get it.....Im trying.....I JUST DONT GET IT....yet. I really want to see if this making money online is real. This is something I really want to give a try. Thanks for the reply alexsimon.

Your using a bad example. You should never infringe upon the use of someone else's trademark. So, let's say it is not a trademarked term then search engine submission, development, park the name and optimize the keywords are some ways to increase or get traffic to the name. Be careful though because it sounds like your flirting with something you shouldn't be, jmo. Cheers,

It would get popular through the search engines. Lets change the example to something without a trademark. e.g. guitars.com

people may type that into their web browser and find info on guitars.

Now if you had guitars.mobi and someone typed this into a seach engine, with a little search engine optimisation (building quality backlinks) you could get this onto the first page because if a website has the keyword in the domain this helps a lot.

try it....type guitars into google and see that a lot of the domains will have the word guitar in them

hope that helps
