Hi All

I recently mentioned to a mate about domain names and im making some money with them. He then got interested, found a name he liked and said he would buy it.

I said if its that good don’t wait buy now. He waited a few days and now someone else has bought it.

It’s a .com name but does not show who actually bought it. I think he may think I stole it from him. Is there any way to prove I didn’t.

Also I normally check all the names through a trusted company. He used another. Could they have seen what people typed and stole it? Or is that me being silly. I just want to prove I don’t have it.

Thanks

Wait until a site pops up for that domain name. That would be about the only way to "prove" that you didn't buy it.

There really isn't anything conclusive from a proof standpoint one way or the other, unless the registrar reveals that information.

This is completely off the subject, but head over to the general forum and read the tread about Pottery Born (dot) org. There's a little info on how to look up registrar/whois related info, although if it's cloaked that probably won't help you. But it's also high entertainment.

Wrong, have you never heard of a whois? A whois shows an abundant amoutn of information about the buyer of any domain, unless the individual paid extra money to hide themselves from the whois, which is rare.

Try this:

Is his birthday coming up? Maybe his mom bought it for him as a surprise.

J0ker reread the original post. I believe the issue is that the domain is registered privately and whois isn't showing the info. It's a lot less rare than you think. Maybe registrars will offer the privacy for free now when you transfer a domain or buy beyond a year or register several domains at the same time.

1) Private domain registrations are more common than you might think.

2) Some companies (e.g. sibername.com) don't charge for private domain registrations.

3) Even if the domain record were public, domain whois info can easily be faked or "entered incorrectly."

The information I was referring to was the IP address, credit card info, etc. that would be a lot more revealing than what is shown to the public.
