Does it make sense to start new servise with expensive taken 4-letters domain or register any available with 5 or more letters. In my opinion, when site have 4 letters, it looks huge in my head.

1) They are probably old service
2) If they are new, that probably have much money to buy 4-letter domain

Of course, i think nice 4-letters domains, not any garbage.

There are still 4 letter domain bargains to be had. Part of the list I maintain has 4 letter .com/net/org for $5 each.

This sounds optimistic. Are you selling them? Please send me complete list of 4-letters domains via PM.

you won't find nice LLLL.com 's. There are still 30k available, but they mostly start with q x z etc.
If you want to develop a service you need pronounceable names just like Ecuf.com or Jurc.com (these are for sale by me btw).

And to answer your question, it depends on your budget, on what service will you use. 4 letters are always ok, but if you cannot afford them, try registering a 6 letter "brandable". But of course, on the long term you will invest more money in marketing the name, than buying a 4 letter.
