My domain name expired on 29th July. Prior to this date I contacted my registrar and requested to transfer the domain to another host.
My registrar procrastinated and deliberately misunderstood or failed to reply until the expiry date arrived. On 30th July they gave me an authorisation code for the transfer and my new host tried to retrieve the domain only to find that it had been locked. On requesting that they unlocked it the original registrar said that I had to renew it with them before I could transfer it out. I have been to the ICANN website transfer FAQs and found this one.......
My domain name has just expired. Can my registrar require me to pay for a renewal before I can transfer to a new registrar?
No. Your new registrar of choice can initiate a transfer request on an expired domain name once they receive the required authorization from you. Expiration or non-renewal of a domain name is not a valid reason for denial of a transfer request.
I pointed this out to my registrar but they just repeated their insistence that I renew before they will unlock the domain. The current Status of my domain is as follows.....
Client delete - prohibited
Client hold.
Client renew - prohibited
Client transfer - prohibited
Client update - prohibited.
My new registrar says that their hands are tied until the domain is unlocked. As they already have the authorisation code, do I just wait for the RGP to expire and then ask my new registrar to get the domain? If so, when will that be? My problem is that I really don't know exactly how these processes work. Is what the original registrar is doing legal?
