Hi All

My domain name and its emails are not working. Looking at the whois it looks as though the domain name run out on the 18th. Now Im in big trouble. I did ask the host company on 6th of this month when I renewed some other names when the next one was up and they said October.

What happens now

Regards

You will need to renew the domain name as soon as possible. Probably with another company to be safe.

He might not be able to...there's some lock rule whereby you can't transfer registrars unless it's more than 30 days before the date of expiration in some cases (if I remember correctly, this only applies to .com, .net, .org, etc.)

The only thing (and the quickest thing) you can do is to contact your host, give them a credit card number, and get it renewed. Once that's done, then transfer it away as soon as you can. Your host should never be your registrar, and this is one of the many reasons.

Hi Jamie.

Seems your my personal helper today. Thanks.

I cant as when I look at it in 123 reg its showing as registered but out of date. The .co.uk is also out. I know ultimately this is probably my fault but I did ask them on the 6th of this month what names were up next. I now got to site her panicking till tomorrow and also check the rest of the 60 domains I own to see what else is up and when. I need to put the dates next to the names on the spread sheet.

Before me and a business partner paid them to renew a name and they sent us an invoice saying they had but they didnt. I guess after that I should have moved all my names away from them.

The .co.uk name still points to the site strange.

Thanks

Hi Adam

Our posts crossed so only just read your one. Can you explain a bit more why your host should not be your registrar? Not heard this one before and it sounds interesting?

Thanks

The reason basically goes that if your hosting company screws you up and you have the domain registered else where you can easily alter the DNS settings and point to another hosting server.

If the domain name is tied up with the hosting it can become incredibly difficult to pry the name back off them (I have several domain names and only 1 is registered with a host , it was free and the host is the most reliable one I have dealt with so I should be safe for now)

When one of my hosts screwed me over big time (bargainhost.co.uk) I was so glad I had the domains regsitered somewhere else, I simply got another hosting account, changed the dns and had my site back up in a day. I then simply told my hosting company that I had done so and would be expecting a refund for the months I would not be using (they agreed and refunded me all of the 7 months left on my account)

ok..went a bit off topic there. Hope that helps.

Jamie

It helped me. It saved me the bother of explaining that.

Seriously, James, the reasons Jamie just listed are exactly what I'm talking about. It boils down to control: if your host ever screws up (and in this case, they did by not telling you when your renewals were due), then you need a quick and easy means to transfer away.

Good hosts go bad. Bad hosts go good. It's very rare that you find a host you can stick with. Cover your *** in the event that you ever have to switch.
