I had signed up for one of the pretty common packages where they pay for the domain registration if you sign up for a year of hosting ... the cell phone business model. They signed me up for another package I never actually signed up for, with a 15 day change-your-mind policy, and sent a bill 30 days later.
I don't know how common this kind of thing is; hopefully it's pretty rare. But ... words to the wise. It's a little more work to register the domain and hosting separately*, but there's a little more protection there.
* If you do split the bill, make sure you actually connect the domain to the host's nameservers; don't just use a frame.
