Hi Everyone!!

My husband purchased 2 new Domain Names for me, for 2 new sites we are in the midst of creating. A "dot com" and a "dot net".

I am curious if "dot net" is as popular as "dot net" ??

Any opinions?

GlitterHugs,
Jenny

the question contradicts itself but i get what your saying...

my IMO is that it all depends on the domain you get.
if it has a good ring with '.net' better than '.com' then yes.

take an example...
my website.

i personally like ghettocars.net better than ghettocars.com

my opinion is that car related websites should have a .net it sounds better.

but...to tell the truth '.com' is more popular. you tell anyone. go to my website ghettocars. their first intent would be ghettocars.com and most likely ghettocars.com would have the same content as ghettocars.net thus you loose a user.

buying both is a really good idea too. lets say i buy ghettocars.net/.com/.org

if anyone decides to go to '.com' or '.net' they would end up in the same site which is beneficial!

it all really depends...

-Josh

I would go for a .com in 50out of 100 situations. My only reasons not to get a .com would be:
If .net sounds better (like everyone.net)
If .net is a very good domain (webhosting.net)
If the site is informational and a good .info is available
If the site is UK based
If the site is charitable (.org)

So...we bought Scrappingaround.com and Scrappingaround.net, I'm really not big on the .net...probably because like Josh said I would be the person that would automatically type in .com so we could have them link to each other! So if someone were to type in .net it would come to .com

Thanks guys!! You are all the greatest!!

I think most folks automatically assume the a site is a dot com rather than a dot net, so unless they are paying attention, the dot com will draw more traffic and be easier to find

scrappingaround? that sounds good to me as .com and .net

.net has a good ring to it though. kinda like scrapping around the net. but the '.com' is more popular. id stay with both

it all depends though how much income the site makes. if the site pays for both and makes an income, then they are a keeper!

Hi Jenny,

I would pretty much agree with everything David commented on. Usually, a dot com is much catchier, and easier to remember. As a web surfer, I'm sure you've encountered times where you've typed in ".com" into your address bar, but the site was actually a ".net" or ".org". So for simplicity's sake, I would definitely recommend getting a .com as opposed to any of the others. Under the circumstances that David outlined, however, a .net would definitely be better.

I do agree that buying both scrappingaround.com and scrappingaround.net is a good idea, however. In the instance that your site becomes a web-wide hit, you certainly don't want someone registering that other domain just to take advantage of your site's popularity.

You did good too secure both TLD's (.com & .net) This protects you against a competitor operating one extension while you operate another..

If it's too be a 'commercial' / retail type site.. I would build on the .com and simply redirect the .net site traffic to the .com

Many times a .net works for a 'specific' type of site.. such as a community network, or a hosting network.. where the .com represents a 'commercial' type environment.

However, as others have pointed out.. it seems the 'general' net user/consumer tends to automatically go to the .com extension of a given domain name vs. the .net. Thus, by securing both extensions for your new domain name, was a wise move.

Goodluck.

Thankyou!!

I can't "leak" out what I am working on right now, but as soon as it is up and running you guys will be the first to preview it.

After reading all of these posts, with the success of my Scrapbooking/Rubberstamping Website at www.ourcreativecompanion.com the minute my husband gets home from work tonite I am going to have him purchase www.ourcreativecompanion.net also just to protect my best interest!

Hadn't thought of any of this, and I thank you very much for taking the time to help me!!

Jenny
