Registering an existing domain

I did a WHOIS on a domain that I was considering registering only to find out that it has already been registered. Repeated attempts to access the domain return a "Page cannot be displayed" in my browser and Google shows no cache of the page.

The whois record shows that the domain is ACTIVE and the registration record doesn't expire till 2012.

I know that often times people will register domains in an attempt to resell them but this domain has no "FOR SALE" advertisement.

Now i'm not going to get into try to "hijack" the domain, but i'm wondering if there are any legal, ethical ways to obtain this domain (without waiting until 2012).

You may want to email the owner to find out if they would consider selling the domain; that is legal and ethical.

Thanks for the reply. I sent an email to the administrative contact under the WHOIS details.

If I don't get a reply, is there any other course of action? Would contacting the registrar be of any assistance?

No it wouldn't.

The domain belongs to the registered owner, if he wants it to just sit there doing nothing he is well within his rights to do so.

I have about two dozen domains just sitting around in my account waiting to be developed, most will probably never see the light of day but they are mine until they expire
