Ok, my mind has gone totally blank. What is WLS?

I'll slap myself on the forehead when you tell me, won't I?

I'll be back with links & info on the WLS as per ICANN, which is a 'change' taking place with the deleted/drop names & how the registrars will be required to be on the 'Waiting List Service'..

Sorry.. been busy...
will post the info on this.

it's rather interesting... I have mixed feelings about it.

you can visit icann here:

took me some time to locate this good info on the
Verisigh~SnapNames~iCann~WLS (waiting list)

good read

For full story here's the link:http://portland.bizjournals.com/port...1/daily37.html

Current waiting list services are offered by individual domain name registrars, which must then compete with each other when a given domain name becomes available. VeriSign plans to offer its new waiting list service to all ICANN-accredited registrars of domain names, thus providing equal access to all registrars and greater efficiency for those who are trying to register specific domain names. (ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a nonprofit organization that manages the domain name system.) VeriSign Global Registry Services has submitted a proposal to all ICANN-accredited registrars, seeking their comment on the waiting list service.

Ever been to Bucharest?

Im not planning to make the trip any time soon, but as you know, many of the top registrar/registry brass will convene in Romania next week to debate DNS policy issues large and otherwise.

ICANN restructuring may have top billing, but there's an agenda item that indirectly touches the aftermarket:

WLS.
This is the wait listing service proposed by the VeriSign registry to manage the redistribution of expiring names.

Some observers have framed this proposal as the secondary market's public stage debut, in which aftermarket names finally become available to John. Q. Registrant.

They're wrong, of course.

First, these are clearly primary market registrations, bought from the registry through a registrar.

Even as domainologists race to the best properties in the delete queues, their purchases aren't made on the secondary market.although many end up there. And second, my friend John already uses the AVB.

But WLS isn't without an aftermarket angle.

It may help educate buyers by confirming that taken names aren't necessary unavailable.

Whether the cherry name that John needs will ever expire is another matter, but by introducing an alternative to settling for his second (or third, or fourth) choice of domain names, WLS may lead John Q. Registrant into the aftermarket where his first choice is waiting.

Whatever evolves from the WLS debate, the aftermarket is humming along, growing with every registration, and gaining speed.

Good Luck,

Peter Girard,

General Manager

Seems like some registrars are trying to really commercialize and capture the market on re-selling expiring names.

In one sense, I can't blame them.......they are not making anything on domain names that have been registered and are now just sitting with no ownership.

Make sense?

Dave

IF THIS GOES THROUGH..... (and I'm sure the Mammouth VERISIGN will see that it does.. cause they are in bed with SnapNames...) if this get's passed, it's total abuse IMO. I am against this totally, many are for it, I am all for DROP'N the name into the general public pool, and let the domainer's fight for the names... But this deal here they propose is just a greedy plan..

http://www.theregus.com/content/6/25650.html

It can also charge whatever it likes for the service, since there will be no other route to getting hold of an expired domain. How VeriSign arrived at the figure of $35 is anyone's guess, especially since other companies have offered to run the system for $6 per domain. SnapNames has also told investors its revenues could increase by 700 per cent as a result of the deal.

The fact that the $35 is non-refundable, even if the domain is re-registered, has led some critics to brand it a nothing but a tax. How the service would end up being marketed is anyone's guess.
