OK. I can give some answers here. Maybe not the best to describe these, but I'm sure there will be some more people along soon to set me right.

DNS
DNS is the system which makes your domain load your website. Basically the domains system works as follows:

When you register a domain it has DNS servers associated with it these are usually run by your host. I will come back to these in a second.

When someone requests your domain in their browser, it will be looked up on your ISP's DNS servers which are updated from the central database. This tells them the DNS server associated with your domain.

The browser then checks the DNS server listed for your domain, which tells the server where to locate the site on the host's servers. It also deals with subdomains and mail routing.

Domain Locking
I'm not totally sure on this, but I think a domain becomes locked when it expires, so it does not work but is still registered, and you get about 30 days to pay before it is dropped.

Transfers
Yes. Thats basically it. The simplest way to transfer a domain is to update the admin and billing data for it. This will mean it is now owned by the person you sold it to and they can do whatever they like with it.

Most systems have logins and domain control panels now, though, so you will either need to give the new user the login details (if you have no other domains on that username) or you will need to transfer it to their account. Most registrars will allow you to do this for free.

In some events, the other person will want to use another domain registrar to the current one it is registered with. Basically, all you will need to do in this case is to change the details and then renew/transfer it to the new registrar.
