Hrmm...

Last I read somewhere, the base price for OpenSRS domains were $6.00

underselling to perhaps build brand identity somewhere else?

I have never gone for the registrars that were too cheap. I just believe you get what you pay for.

NSI charged way too much. Some of these others are not charging enough. At those prices I don't feel I would get what I expect in the service department.

I will stick with Directnic. $15 per year is just right

. If you use the link you will find yourself at the top of a page that will search for com, net, org, info and biz. It appears that you could be billed $5 before you know if the name is even available.

Verisign had this to say,

Whois Server Version 1.3

Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registeredwith many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.netfor detailed information.

Domain Name: DOMAIN5DOLLARS.COM
Registrar: STARGATE COMMUNICATIONS, INC.

Whois Server: whois.stargateinc.com
Referral URL: http://www.stargateinc.com

Name Server: NS3.ZONEEDIT.COM
Name Server: NS4.ZONEEDIT.COM

Updated Date: 19-jun-2002>>> Last update of whois database: Fri, 21 Jun 2002 16:44:51 EDT <<<

The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains andRegistrars.

The registrar we were trying to contact could not be reached for your query.

The request timed out.

I like the r2d2 bit, but what's really going on here?

I know it's a control panel, I've already been there.

NameServers:
r2d2.asdf456.com209.25.161.252
c3po.asdf456.com216.65.98.189

I just peeled off the r2d2 from the asdf456.com and looked it up.

What clues are obvious? Just look at the keyboard in front of you and of course, "asdf" is a typing lesson and "456" is another horizontal string. No doubt it's probably the control panel for domain5dollars' single page.

Any hackers out there?

I find this situation quite impossible, even more impossible than free domains. Unless these guys add advertising to their domains, they cannot offer it for $5, because, as AhmedF pointed out, it costs them at least $6 for one domain. My bet is that they either are a scam (and it is seemingly so), or they have the typical plan of a "dirt cheap" host...

"Get lots of sign-ups by attracing customers with cheap prices, and then finish it off by holding the users' domains for another year, forcing them to register with you for ridiculous prices (like $50 a domain)."

I wouldn't trust them one bit.

couldn't agree with you~ any more. the domain owner never replied to my email & yesterday their site was DOWN all day..not sure if they are 'live now'..

but it's clearly a 'red light' too me..

just hate to think 'newbies' who may fall prey..

* they could be credit card fraud'sters.. stealing folks' card #'s??

no 'about us' or 'company info' on their page.

no info about the 'host provider' of your domains..

hmmmm

the "SpinelessRats" LOL

their site's back up now..

all roads lead back to
www.registerfly.com
and
they are utilizing this site for their 'reseller program'

www.resellerprofits.com

i spent an hr. on reseller profits yesterday.. and could NOT find out the 'wholesale' cost of their domains??

one who is an 'accredited registrar' has warned us of this
fly by night site operation..

so....... also.. all roads have led back to Enom too..

hmmm

Hi SiteTutor

You're everywhere!

Anyway, I tried to access the http://www.domain5dollars.com but had no luck. Seems to either be down or have already disappeared from the market?

Yae, Michelle! The good tutor makes her rounds! LOL

Hey, that's interesting about the site being down, didn't realize that.. guess they are having 'difficulties' with their host?? not sure.. but, I've emailed the owner of the site, invited him to intro his grand domain plan, but that was over a mth ago, and I've not heard back from him.

Hope nobody bought names through that outfit!

It could be fore real, I know some registrars are selling .co.uk names for something like £30, whereas I know of some that are perfectly reputable selling them for £3.50!

Guess this is the free market mechanisms at work!

Hi alicia101,

Could you please tell us where we could register .co.uk domains for around 3.50 pounds? That sounds very cheap, and I haven't seen domains for that cheap without advertisements!

Thanks!

123-Reg are supposed to be OK, just £2.89 a year for co.uk.

I prefer Supanames, though, because they do it with great hosting for only £14 a year.
