Since I'm Canadian, we don't have such an animal, but in the US I'm aware that credit cards are issued that can draw money from the cardholder's bank account (as opposed to the old-style way which credit cards operate).

The question I have about these cards is whether or not they're any different than traditional credit cards, and specifically whether or not they have the CVV2/CID number on them. Do they?

They are known as debit cards here in the U.S., and are issued, retrieved, and used completely separate from credit cards. While different companies such as Discover and Master Card do have 3-Digit security codes, American Express has 4 numbers. These numbers apply to both credit and debit cards.

So yes, we do have those codes.

Okay. Are they the same as regular credit cards then (the CVV2 numbers?)

My Mastercard has 4 + 3 digits on the back.

My Visa debit card has the same.

I think there is more than one type of debit card in use here in the states. If it is backed by MC or V, it as I posted. When used at a retail location a different 4 digit PIN number is also required for the debit cards. Online use you just give the three digit number from the back and it is processed like a normal CC.

Thanks, guys. That ultimately answered my question. It wasn't the answer that I had hoped for, but at least it's what I suspected.

So, do you know for sure that all gateways work equally with credit cards and debit cards? Or is it about Amercian gateways only? I wonder if it depends on the country of gateway, or on gateway API, etc...
