Why do people Spam? (Or create programs to spam?)

Don’t they know that 99% of the population HATES spam?
Do they think it is good for business?
Why are they willing to put so much time and effort into a “spam program” when they could use that energy to create something positive?

I just don’t understand why they do it.

I suppose a select portion of spammers could make lots of money, but what about all the other spam (like forum, email spam)? Do they ALL do it for the money, even though no one pays attention to it?

email spammers send out 100s of millions of emails each day / time, if there is only a 0.5 conversion rate it amounts to several million dollars in sales a day.

And yes people do buy from spam emailers.

In one recent "pump and dump" scam on stocks & shares, the value of the stock mentioned in the email went up 30% one day, so when the scammers sold the stocks they had bought before the email went out they made a nice profit and of course the fools who were soon parted from their money were left with a collection of worthless stock.

its a paid advertising, even if the ratio of getting a sale from spam is 1:1000 its still a sale.

Yes. But the 1% of idiots in the world actually buy stuff they're advertising, making it worthwhile.

Spamming is valuable business but it can also have adverse effects down the road on ones brand image. Those they want to spam would be best served by distancing such action from their main business. For example, establish a completely unrelated advertising company that indirectly spams that your company can hire. You always have the deniability as to whether or not you knew the advertising company was using spamming to get you business.

However, I personally feel that the long term threats and dangers spamming offer to a brand image outweighs any short term benefits received from spamming.

If you're talking about email spam, that's a good question. But if you're asking about spam in a larger sense, at least some of what seem like spam programs actually are created to be something positive.

I built something that generates random text. The goal was to have something more realistic than lorem ipsum for user interface development and testing. Now that would be a dream come true to mfa sploggers; generate huge madlib posts that probably aren't distinguishable from real content to a search bot. When I describe it, it really sounds like a spam program. I put the energy into building it to have loads of test data on hand, and also to sharpen my skills with certain types of software development concepts.

On the other hand, I know people write virus labs and all kinds of malware for no good reason. But at least some is created with good intentions, and abused by someone else who figures uot how to profit from it. That's why I never released my lorem ipsum software.

Sample output:

Quote:
Application suggested offer achterberg high education spanish - slightly tooo uniforms demands windswept jury taipei - hotlist curious summation symptoms. Escapee million political prints long jumbo. Create increased ninth. Earned palm groups used about places teaching buffett. Duck inspires identified alcoholics.
When I'm building a cms for technical information, I'll use the app to regurgitate words from the Apache or sql documentation. Before I selected a theme for my photography blog, I looked at some thousand word test posts with lots of random words related to photography. It probably doesn't make any positive difference to test a ui about tech with content that has words like deadlock and rollback instead of lorem and ipsum, but it does feel like a more accurate preview.

i think it could be mainly because of three reasons;

One - they believe and apply what other said with out using their heads, "Mislead People"

Two - they think they could reach on top without putting up lot of strive and brain storming

Three - Intentionally they want to creat trouble for genuine talent, they are trouble makers

As long internet lives we will see Spammers stalking!

Cheers!

Because 50% of us are dumb enough not to vote, 30?% of us are dumb enough to smoke, 80% of us are dumb enough to CHOOSE to be overweight, or for that matter some of us still buy extended warranties, or play the lottery. I’d definitely believe those conversion rates are true, if not higher. I've never taken part nor do I plan to spam, but as long as all those dumb people are online there will be spam.

lol @ calling people names like "fools" when they probably make a lot more money than you.

I mean I hate them too and call them names all the time but stupid, or fool isn't one of them.

Why all the mystery. People spam because it's profitable for them to do so. See Chris' post at #5 above for a breakdown.

Spam costs an insignificant amount to send so even with a very low conversion rate a spammer can earn a lot of money. And spammers don't have a problem making money by sending spam.
