Hello,

I'd like to get some feedback here. I used to bid on freelance sites such as GetAFreelancer and ScriptLance, however found most bidders for fairly complex sites bid $100-$500, as low as $50. I could not really compete with these prices. I guess my question is, how do you work for such a low rate and still generate enough income?

For most clients I do database driven sites with SEO'd pages and a backend editing panel. In the past people I have encountered would not pay more than $200 for a similar site. I tend to feel my skillset is worth more than that, since I have studied web design and have a lot of experience. Is it just me, or are freelance web developers undervalued?

It's impossible to charge more than pennies an hour at freelance sites, so where do you find work? I'm seriously doubting whether a career in web design is possible, or at least a successful one. Going to lengths to find clients and being told "show me a sample of the design you will do for me, and then I'll tell you whether I will use your services or not" or being asked to work for free or a few dozen dollars has been tiring for me. Has anyone else ever had such an experience?

I've been doing this a while and I find that quality clients appreciate a quality price. Basically... You get what you pay for and good clients appreciate this maxim.

Yeah, I pimp myself on those sites and others but when it gets down to drafting a brief I usually walk away because I have other projects to work on.

Building a portfolio...

If you need to build up a portfolio there's no harm in doing sites REALLY cheap, that way... Later down the line you have a track record and referalls from clients.

How do I get business...?

Word of mouth and I also go back to existing clients with proposals for SEO, SEM and redesigns now and again.

Hope that's of some use...
